Coco Cafe Koh Mak

A lot more than just a coffee shop, it’s Koh Mak’s meeting point.

Coco Cafe opened in mid-2014 with the idea of not just making another coffeeshop but also a meeting point for both the local community and visitors.   The Thai owners, Ball and Oy are both committed to trying to preserve the environment and introduce new ways to save energy, therefore Coco Cafe was built with this in mid and utilises solar energy.  To reduce  waster a reverse osmosis system has been installed which allows visitors to refill empty plastic water bottles for just 5 Baht per liter – much cheaper than buying more bottled water.

Cycling is the ideal way to see the island, so at Coco Cafe, anyone who buys a coffee gets a free bicycle to use.  There’s a new cycling trail nearby and Ball and Oy will offer advice and tips on the best sights to see in different areas of the island.   They also run a volunteer tree planting project and have a nursery with 2,000 saplings which will be planted across the island. A map is always helpful if you are exploring the island and the largest map of the island is at Coco Cafe, it’s over 28Sqm.  :-)

‘Ball’ is one of the best known characters on Koh Mak. Originally from Bangkok he moved to the island in 2003 to manage a new resort and ended up staying and working with the resort owners in order to promote the island and it’s unique attractions. He’s known for his willingness to help anyone and go out of his way to assist visitors to the island. He also brought the first speedboat to the island, helped set up the coral nursery, worked with the local authorities to plan the mountain bike trail, and organised numerous training courses in everything from English language to the art of coffee making for locals and resort staff. He also has a passion for fast motorbikes, which has got to be a good thing. You’ll find him, or his wife ‘Oy’, at Coco Cafe – their coffeeshop  / meeting point every day.

So, if you are visiting Koh mak and need real, unbiased, information on what to see, where to go and how to do it.  Call in to Coco Cafe.
